THE former chief executive of St George Bank, Paul Fegan, has appeared in Federal Court to answer claims he engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct while head of the bank in 2008, in the lead-up to the bank's merger with Westpac.

Paul Fegan, the former chief executive of St George Bank, has denied that he deliberately misled and deceived his former employees when he wrote to them asking them to stay with St George while it merged with Westpac in 2008.

St George Bank has hit back at reports that 200 technology staff are to be fired and said that any employees let go would be “no worse off”.
The comments follow reports up to 200 jobs in the IT division are to be outsourced to IBM. Westpac Banking Corp bought St George in 2008.
